Moab sunsets aren’t famous because they’re edited, they’re famous because the landscape is perfectly built for them. At over 4,000 feet above sea level, Moab’s high-desert air is usually dry and remarkably clear. As the sun sinks toward the horizon, its light has to travel through much more of Earth’s atmosphere. Along the way, shorter blue wavelengths are scattered in every direction, allowing the longer reds, oranges, and pinks to become the colors we see. Then the red rock takes over. The cliffs surrounding Moab are rich in iron oxide, the same mineral that gives rust its color. Those rocks naturally reflect warm light, so when the evening sun hits them just right, the entire landscape seems to glow from the inside out. Every sunset is a little different. A slight change in dust, clouds, or humidity can completely transform the colors, which is why no two evenings ever look exactly alike. It’s not a filter. It’s physics, geology, and a little bit of desert magic working together.

My dad and brother came across this old earthen explosives storage shack while exploring the remnants of Moab’s mining country. These little structures were built into the earth to help contain the danger if something went wrong—and decades later, they’re still sitting out here telling part of Utah’s mining history.

Rory from Trail Mater called me and asked if I wanted to go play race cars in the White Wash Sand Dunes.

I don’t really know how you say no to that… so obviously, we went. 😂

What was supposed to be a day of messing around in the dunes turned into:

🏁 Racing Trail Mater — I lost.
💥 Kenny rolling his Can-Am
💪 Flipping Kenny back onto his wheels
🔧 Me blowing a belt
🏜️ Rory somehow getting himself stuck

Basically… exactly the kind of day you’d expect when Trail Mater calls and asks if you want to go play race cars.

This was easily one of the most fun videos I’ve made so far. Huge thanks to Rory, Kenny, and the Trail Mater crew for letting me come out and cause some problems with them.

Peter and I headed out to explore Dome Plateau outside Moab, Utah, and this trail ended up having a little bit of everything.

We stopped at La Boca Arch, checked out an incredible dome formation, looked across at the historic Dewey Bridge, and eventually made our way to one of the strangest and most otherworldly views I’ve seen around Moab.

Along the way, Peter and I get into some completely unrelated—but somehow perfectly trail-appropriate—conversations.

We talk about GlueTread and what the company and its products are all about, discuss some legitimate ways to avoid getting lost when you’re exploring the backcountry, talk about the history and remains of Dewey Bridge, and eventually get onto the subject of what it would actually be like to race the Baja 1000.

This one is less about rushing from point A to point B and more about everything you discover along the way.

And make sure you stick around for the end.

The final overlook is unlike just about anything else I’ve seen around Moab.
